I have been thinking about this moment from the second I left Indy last Sunday. My feet up in my living room next to my wife and surrounded by my family.

    Today;
Day 8: Wabasha, MN - Minneapolis, MN
    Time; 5:53:41
    Distance; 85.34

In total I was riding for 60 hours 40 minutes covering 780.6 miles.

I am going to post a general recap later this evening (or Monday).

I can't thank everyone who followed me and commented. The comments meant so much to me.

This trip has been exactly what I wanted - challenging and fun!

For the record - my butt hurts.

    Good morning everyone!

Welcome to the final day of riding. I know that Ellie has been had at work getting our new place ready to go and I can't wait to see it.

To be honest my legs are pretty toasted but nothing will stop me from making it home today. There is more climbing especially around Red Wing and Hastings but I am without the trailer so that should make a difference.

During the day I will continue to post as much as I can. Including some lists of the trip.

Day 7: Lansing, IA - Wabasha, MN
    Time; 8:53:13
    Distance; 101.89

It was a good day today. I had a lot of fun. My legs are destroyed but the good news is tomorrow I ditch the trailer.

The trailer is a BOB brand and my riding partner tomorrow is Bob, so there is only room for one Bob.

See everyone tomorrow for the exciting conclusion of Apolis!

The long hard climbs (like that one) are about optimism and acceptance.

The optimism is looking at the next bend or peak in the road and thinking - maybe that's the peak.

The acceptance is getting there realizing it isn't the peak and looking up the road for the next potential peak.

As I ride into Minnesota I really could not be happier. Not just to be in my home state but to be leaving Iowa. This contained the worst days (but not nights) and roads of the trip. Also to be honest I didn't find people all that friendly. Not sure if it will be different on MN but at least it will be different.

Ok at my first town of the day, right on the Iowa-Minnesota boarder. So far the day has been exactly what I needed not to windy and rather flat compared to yesterday.

    Good morning everyone!

I know that there are probably less people checking in today or at least less frequently because you aren't at work! :)

It was so very cold last night. I was wearing every bit of clothing that I have with me and in the sleeping bag. I slept like a rock.

Today I ride into Minnesota I can't wait. It was 2 days through Indiana 2 days through Iowa and hopefully 2 days through Minnesota - today is day 1.

The plan is to meet some folks (including Ellie) in Wabasha tonight. My father-in-law Bob will be joining me for Sundays ride into the cities. Of course all of this depends on a successful day today - go away wind.

    Today's recap;

What can I say about today. It was frustrating, exceedingly difficult, painful.... and a whole lot of fun.

When I was playing football there were certain plays which required you to "set your jaw". What does that mean? Well it was a play that from the moment it was called in the huddle you knew that it was going to hurt. As an offensive lineman this usually meant pulling to pick up a linebacker or hit a blitzing safety. Setting your jaw means making sure your mouthpiece is in secure and when you put your hand on the ground you bite down as hard as you can. Once the ball is snapped you just go jaw clenched and wait for the pain.

If everything with the play goes well, you forget about the pain and get ready to go again. If it goes wrong you think about how much it hurt.

Why am I telling you all this? Well today I had to "set my jaw" to get through. It's almost unfair that the hilliest day so far was also one of the windiest that I have experienced as a cyclist. When the hills and wind combined it was infuriating. But I am in Lansing exactly where I wanted to be. 12 miles from the Minnesota boarded. Tomorrow morning I will leave Iowa for my home state. Hopefully two days away from sleeping in my bed next to my wife.

    Goodnight everyone.

    Folksy dime store wisdom;

-- Sometimes in life and on a bicycle you can be riding along right on the edge. If you lose focus you can slide off the road and onto the shoulder. When this happens all you can do is keep riding and look for a good place to get back on the road. --

    Good morning everyone!

Yesterday my sister pointed out that the place I was staying is exactly what a motel should look like. I have to agree especially from the outside.

Today will be long and hill so I am getting and early start. Weather is supposed to be much cooler (high in the 60's) and very windy.

Day 5: Muscatine, IA - Dyersville, IA
    Time; 7:45:16
    Distance; 90.81

It was so doggone hilly! I am expecting more hills tomorrow but I will be doing some more miles.

I have to tell everyone how much I love the comments it is like having all my friends and family on the trip with me.

    Responses to comments;

Milo- Thanks for the explanation about the hills I knew I could count on you. Now I have a highly scientific reason to curse the hills.

Stacy- Tell Jacob it's on I will race him anytime anyplace!

Grandma- The mileage you calculated is how the car drives :) shorter but they don't like bikes on the freeway. This will end up being right around 800 miles.

Tatters- Dime store philosophy - I like it, expect to see it tomorrow!

Molly- Luckily there haven't been any honks (that would freak me out a bit). People waiving has been sporadic less people in Iowa so far.

    More response coming tomorrow!

Heck of a day today. I got about three and a half hours of sleep last night due to a combination of rowdy teens in the park, a thunderstorm and a dog barking in my face at 3:45 am (the owner was apologetic).

Almost everything went right with the ride beside my U-turn and here I am out of Illinois and into Iowa.

    Recap of the day;
Day 4: Henry, IL - Muscatine, IA
    Time; 9:26:01
    Distance; 119.83

Today was my longest distance of the trip so it should all be shorter mileage from here (don't expect more 100+ days) but all in the hills of the Mississippi river valley.

I am taking advantage of my hotel time to do some laundry, bike maintenance free breakfast and sleeping in! I might post earlier in the day but won't rise too early.

    Have a great night everyone.

So after a very long day which included many dogs, a broken spoke, and rain I arrive in Iroquois, Illinois. Looking for a place to pitch my tent I asked the woman working the grocery if there was a nearby campground. After one phone call I was led across the street to a city park with the Iroquois village hall in it. I am now sleeping in the Mayor's air conditioned office with a shower, sink and a refrigerator full of free drinks. To top that off I met two college students from Carleton College who are riding to Minnesota. Don't know how long I will be with them but it is good to have company.

    171.55 total miles traveled.

    Goodnight everyone.

Ok so a flurry of activity in the last 45 or so. Dog chase numbers 4-5 at back to back houses (.25 miles apart). In accelerating away from #5 I heard a familiar ping from my back wheel. Unfortunately that ping meant a broken spoke. I think that I have a temporary fix in place with the fiber spoke. I am going to try to make it to the closest bike shop about 35 miles away for a permanent fix. I will keep you posted.

  • It is obvious to me that your trip is not about long hills or broken spokes. It is about adventure.

"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." ~Henry David Thoreau.... Or Snoop Dogg. I can't remember which!

You are doing great on your adventure!

Do you remember going up to Highland HS the summer before your FR yr at the U and running the sprints?

  • When you were in first grade you told the teacher you had a big family, 11 brothers and sisters. Well you finally made it. Your comments of yesterday left me in tears - a grandmotherly prerogative. I am so proud and very glad you were not writing during those four years of college football.
Grandma power will be behind you all the way home.

  • I could recite the entire Gophers song with you but instead I think I'll say...

That's another Golden Gopher.... FIRST DOWN!!!

I know it makes no sense but I think it's appropriate. Glad you're in the home state. Weather is looking good for today and tomorrow. Lots of sunshine and no wind.

Hope it is a good night camping, get some rest for those legs. I hope that the weather is just perfect and the hills flatten a little for you tomorrow! love ya...and don't worry Citty - I still(have one left this year)

  • You are having an amazing adventure that you'll be able to talk about for years to come. Think of the hills as a pedal powered roller coaster ride if that helps.

  • Hey Jeremiah
Been studying the maps. Looks like the MRT to Hastings is good.
From Hastings I found a map from Bikely.com. Looks more direct to home than following the MRT into St Paul. Hope the wind has slowed for you. I was installing a storm door this morning and I was cussing at the wind too.
We can take about a rendezvous and last leg plans. Be safe

Posted: 3 Sep 2010 by Jesse

  • J-As I keep track from the left coast, it's pretty cool to switch views from the map to satellite and terrain. I am looking at you traversing down highway 18 in the terrain view I am wondering just who the heck was your travel agent. Are you heading over to cheese-head territory or deep into those crevasses and back West? Who needs reality TV?

  • Jeremiah, thanks for the shout! I want to hear about the pieces from the Lenny Dintenfass collection, too!

Now - don't stand too tall in the stirrups today, but hang tough! It can be SO hard in the kind of conditions you have today. At that point it becomes a mind game, so again I say, HANG TOUGH! And if you waver - just look at that first pic on Main Street and see what a long shadow you cast!

BTW - think we have the same wind here! Wow! Gusts that hit so strong and hard they stop conversation and make you look outside to see what hit! Ted was loving sailing just now - and usually he finds it waaaaaay too boring. Think it's as good as jetskiing today, though. But I know - not as much fun on a bike!

Wishing you strength and fortitude and cheering for you from Indiana!

  • Hang on tight son! I just looked at the forecast and they are calling it "breezy" except for extreme Northern Iowa where they have issued a wind advisory with lessening around 6. Keep an eye out for
low spots and potential standing water. Movie quote: "Could be worse..." What was the chant at the football games when it came to Iowa?

You should have told the farmer that you just purchased the farm next door and were moving all of your stuff! It looks like Field of Dreams is outside the City a ways on Lansing Rd off of Dyersville East Rd. It doesn't show up on the map until you use the Satellite view and zoom in on what looks like a road but is probably a driveway.

  • The frequent ups and downs in that part of Iowa (as well as southeast MN and southwest WI) are the result of a LACK of glaciation. It's known as the driftless area, meaning no glacial drift (deposits). Rolling hills with a riot of wetlands and lakes are usually areas of glacial moraines, but your hills are the result of erosion by hundreds of streams and rivers to the main drainage of the region--the Mississippi--which is significantly lower in elevation that the surrounding landscape. Seen from high above the streams all resemble a multi-branching tree; every single twig is a new hill for you to climb, or descend, if you're lucky...

    I long to see you,
    Away, we're bound away
    Across the wide Mississippi.

  • Hey Junky,

Enjoying all your posts, but I've noticed they're mostly about conveying facts and information. You should add some dime store philosophy and discover something profound about your inner self or humanity in general during your trip, so we can eventually turn this site into a bestselling Chick-Lit novella. Also, let's change your character into a spunky, thirty-something female divorcee.

Felt very secure - though happily didn't have occasion to use it. Sent you my pix - next to last is a trail that Richard got built (only about 1/2 mile of paved set-apart trail, so far, but nice.)

Safe travels tomorrow! I'm back in Indy, looking at wedding venues for the day. And I have my computer back and working! :-)

Would have e-mailed, but see you are not getting e-mail right now (at least that's the way it appears).

The rainbow was sensational! Worth a 2-day ride! And last night's good fortune was "a Willy Weir"! How cool. Keep moving those size 18's in a circle!

And then you post, struck up a conversation with the Mayor--I forgot, you are part Carter, afterall!! This is so much fun!!
