Truly astonishing. What a penultimate day. 25 miles of a jarring road leading up to 4000+ feet of elevation gain, with strong winds. And a Rochefort 10 in a tiny Mountain town general store? Boulevard Ca. Set up tent, eat, enjoy. Too bad I don't have my Rochefort Glass. Rochefort is a small volume trapist brewery from Belgium. The 10 is 11.3% abv. One of my top 5 beers. Probably 4 or 5.

Today was a strange day. I met two guys going to San Diego, but dropped them after a few minutes. Here's the story.

I found that food is a great motivator. It was 11:30 and I had 30 miles to get to the Pizza Hut All you can eat by 1:30. I made it, at exactly 1:30. Through strong crosswinds and 1000 elevation gain. But this Pizza Hut stopped at 1:00. Darn. The two guys couldn't keep up. It was the first time this trip that I felt something I thought was impossible. I began to feel almost as strong as I did during my XC bike trip when I was 24.

Williams, where I was denied my Pizza, is an interesting town on the old route 66. I had an interesting ride down Interstate 40. 15 miles downhill, much of it 6% grade. Good fun.

Strange what a few miles an an interstate will do. Williams has kept itself up, probably from traffic getting off I 40 to go to the Grand Canyon. Ash Fork has strongly declined. People don't ride 66 to LA anymore.

What bike touring will do to even a Specialized Armadillo tire.

Posted: 1 year, 3 months ago

  • Saturday 16 Oct 2010 16:19

Lee's Ferry. The Colorado River. Eventful day. Got up at 5:15, on the road at 6:30. Road 44 miles mostly in the 30's by 9:30. Rolling, over 8950 feet high point. At least 2000 feet of hills. Then road 44 miles in 2:05, 8000 feet down to 3500 at the Colorado. Harder than it sounds pulling a trailer. The last 30 was through open desert with crosswinds.

The purpose of riding about 90 miles before noon was to get tires that Fitwerx mailed to me. Same day service even with the 3 hour time difference. My tires were coming apart.

Unfortunately the post office was closed at 11:15, contrary to what the sending post office indicated. But, the woman in the general store next door was able to open up the post office and get my package.

I also saw my sister in town at the end of her Sierra Club trip. She was rushed and I didn't get a photo. Strangely, we were 200 feet away from each other before I saw her as I started to leave on my bike.

My first Century of the trip +/- 1 mile. Also the first in probably 10 years. I'm staying In a bike hostel which is cool, but one of the other two people here is a jackass.

First day in MO was a bad day for 100 miles. Steep hills. Oh well. The next few days will be worse, then I have an easy week or more.

That makes 8 in the last few days.

Cool county park with a Pizza Place. Only $8. Rough day, very hot and strong crosswinds all day. I was tired from yesterday. I didn't eat or drink enough yesterday because I was looking for a bike shop. My maps listed it in the wrong town, and I got bad directions, several times. They also sold me a used pump, which seemed ok, but is missing a part. Will inflate my bike tires, but not the trailer tires. I had to go there because I broke my chain. I fixed it on the road, but the chain is weakened.

Tomorrow I finish my segment of the Underground Railroad map and start a trans-America trail map. I'm considering following the Katy trail across MO and skipping the Ozarks.

Shipping and recreation on the Ohio. Other side is Indiana. Felt mostly OK today, maybe 75 miles. Should go into Indiana and through Louisville and back into KY tomorrow. Tuesday or Weds I'll be on the Bicentennial trail and soon into the dreaded Ozarks.

It was very windy, but I really enjoyed biking through the Kentucky countryside. Maybe the best day so far. Yesterday was interesting culturally, today was interesting scenically and also culturally because I haven't been to Kentucky before.

Updates. I'm staying in East Fork State Park.

I only biked 20 miles today, but I wanted to get on the road. Yesterday was supposed to be a recovery day, I needed it after the heat the last few days. It was foiled by hemorrhoids. Pretty sure they were from constipation from Cincinnati Chili from Skyline. Good stuff, but not for me.

I should get 40 miles in tomorrow, I'm feeling better. Bumps are hard and I can't generate much power. Positively, my very expensive Pearl Izumi shorts seem to provide some support. Too bad that's not a good marketing slogan. Support for your hemorrhoids. The Craven's were nice about the issue.

Also, the new basket for my trailer is great, but I'm pretty sure I altered my pedal stroke to accommodate for the bent trailer. I will need to re-adjust myself again. Maybe I'll get a full day in on Sunday.

Cincinnati is a nice town. Mt Adams is cool, and the Ball Parks are right in downtown.

Short day, still tired from yesterday.

Yesterday was brutal, started with hilly, rough roads. Then there were more hills, some very steep, one with a nasty little dog. Then it got hot. Compounding that, I asked a woman in the store where I got lunch for some water. She sent me to a spring with a sign on it stating water is not fit for human consumption. I thought I'd have enough until the next stop, but I didn't gauge the heat properly. I stopped for 3 hours to recover and started biking after 5 when it cooled.

I had a similar problem today. I wanted to buy a gallon of water, but the store only had distilled water. So I drank more Gatorade and less water than I wanted. Must be carefully, why do store shelve distiller with regular water, stupid.

I am now on a nice, 90 mile long bike trail. 80 flat miles tomorrow, then take Wednesday off. I'll probably go to Cincinnati. I have a free place to stay in Milford, outside the city.

Notice the bent frame. A woman slowly drove into my trailer, as it was parked. Reported to her insurance, already ordered a new basket, 350 miles down the road in Milford Ohio.

I'm camping for 10 dollars right off a long bike path. I've started the portion of my ride called the underground railroad route.

Not sure if the photo shows it, but this is how my brakes were for the first 50 miles today. I've gotten so much stronger the last few days, it was windy, and the trailer creates drag, that I didn't notice. I simply felt like I did a few days ago. Idiotic.
