Bike Tour 2009

After a month on the road and riding 2279km, I've decided to end my tour here. This comes with a little disappointment. I've long wanted to do an open ended tour without any time constraints or destination. There are people who can tour for months or years and just keep going, but I realized that I'm not one of those people. I got bored of the routine and just wanted to go home.

I had a wonderful tour and look forward the next time. Thank you to everyone who followed along, posted comments, and e-mailed us notes of support.

Three years ago I stayed at this campsite. It was during the World Cup and the campsite had setup a viewing area. Sweden was playing (can't remember against whom) and a bunch of Czechs showed up to egg them on. What followed was the most hilarious exchange of insults in broken English. The memories... :)

I got lucky again with the weather. It stopped raining in the morning and only started to pour just as I found a bridge to take shelter under. I hope this lousy weather forecasting continues - touch wood.

I arrived in Koeln just as it began to rain. I've taken shelter under this bridge.

Next to the bridge is a gondola (like on a ski hill) to cross the Rhein.

The weather forecast was, thankfully, completely wrong. It rained a little in the morning but I stayed dry once I got going. Let's hope for the same luck tomorrow!!

Duisburg. I never thought I'd be here again. This is where Bike Tour 2006 intersects with Bike Tour 2009. Three years ago while following the Rhein in the opposite direction I left the Rhein at Duisburg and rode cross country towards Hamburg.

Imagine my excitement: Bagels! You don't find them too often in Europe.

  • Thursday 16 Jul 2009 20:44

I made it to Nijmegen and hit 2000km just as I arrived at the "Bagels & Beans" bed & breakfast. I first tried to find a nearby campsite, but that was a dead end since it was no longer in business.

Nijmegen is a bustling town with lots of sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants. This weekend is some big "march" where hundreds of thousands of people will arrive to do a walk. Apparently it's an old tradition and many come just for the party. I'm glad I didn't arrive in the middle of that.

Nijmegen also has a bike museum, which I will check out tomorrow. The last bike museum I visited was with Erik in Ybbs, Austria two years ago. I'm curious what I'll find there.

I'm back on the bike after a wonderful visit to Rotterdam. Thank you Laura and Raul for your wonderful hospitality!

Rotterdam is a cool city. The cycling infrastructure sets the standard for other cities to follow. Bikes usually have a dedicated lane (independent of pedestrians) and even their own set of traffic lights. The Dutch seem to embrace this as bikes are always zipping by. It's great!

I'm finally in Rotterdam at my friends' place. I had until 12 to get here before my buddy left the house for the day. I wanted to leave early and take my time, but that changed after rain delayed my departure by two hours. It was a stressful ride and I got here shortly before 12.

The simple luxeries I'm enjoying here: WLAN, Nespresso coffee, a comfortable chair, and a laundry machine. I feel good.

This photo sums up the amazing Dutch trail infrastructure found in these parts. Far left is for pedestrians, middle is for bikes, and right is for horseback. The trails are not always parallel like in this photo, and there are many side trails available for each mode of transportation. Just great!

In this post I'll review some of the gear I'm using on tour this year.

MSR Hubba Hubba Tent - This was an upgrade to the MSR Zoid 2 tent that I purchased in 2006. It's bigger, easier to setup, free standing, and packs almost to the same size. It's a little tight with two persons but perfect when traveling solo. 5/5

Teva Sandles - This year I discovered how great sandles are to have on tour. I last had a pair of Tevas while studying in the 90s. Everybody had them. The problem was they stank. Bad. Really bad. I hesitated buying them for this reason but figured, "Surely they solved the odour problem by now." Nope. What's worse is that putting them on clean feet will transfer the stink your feet. They're horrible. Not even flies would land on them. 1/5 - Only because they're comfortable and stylish.

Heinz Spagheroni Bolognese Sauce - I'd rather eat my Tevas. 0/5

Trangia Stove - A Swedish designed camping stove that uses alcohol instead of butane. What motivated me to get this was its solid base. It's almost impossible to tip over and also works in the wind. The downside is that it's slow (your butane friends will be eating their pasta just as your water begins to boil) and the soot on the pots make a mess. 3/5

iPhone - Phone, SMS, mp3 player, email, Skype, gaming, and www wrapped into a 177g device. Perfect! The difficulty is keeping the thing charged. I bought a rechargeable external battery pack, which I'm much more at ease leaving unattended to charge in the campground washroom. Best of all: It works with TrackMyTour!! Excuse the bias. ;) 5/5

Icebreaker Marino Wool T-Shirt - They claim "No Stink" on the package, and it delivers. This shirt simple does not stink after wearing it for a few days. It's perfect for any activity when you can't regularily do laundry. It's pricey, but definitely worth it. 5/5

Woo hoo! My last night before Rotterdam! What a fun day! I did 121km today and tomorrow it'll be just under 50km to Rotterdam. I'm looking forward to seeing my friends again.

I got probably the worst spot at this campsite. I'm jammed in a corner surrounded by hedges on one side and "dauercampers" on the other.

I've arrived in Zandvoort earlier than expected. The cycling was lots of fun with perfect weather through parts of the North Holland Dune Reserve. The landscape reminded me somewhat of Denmark.

It's certainly holiday season here with many people and families out on their bikes. In fact, today was the first day I really saw that cycling culture that the Dutch are known for.

I rode 27km before I found a place for breakfast. There were no shops and the few restaurants I passed were closed. It's no wonder the Dutch are so slim! The guy at the counter just stared at me when I asked if he spoke English. I thought he was a mute, but it turns out he wasn't.

Thankfully the campsite has free WLAN since I didn't feel like riding in the cold rain against a headwind. I rested the day and did little but read, surf online, and Skype with a few people.

I'm banking on an early start and better weather tomorrow. My next destination is Rotterdam where I'll visit old friends from university. From there on it's the Rhein Radweg towards Switzerland.

Tonight it's penne with olive oil and garlic: camping style!

What a fun day. It was dry and I finally got some speed as I rode the 30km long "Afsluitdijk". Some people wonder how the pyramids were made; I wonder about this. It was absolutely spectacular.

I skipped cooking tonight and stopped at a restaurant before the campsite. It's amazing how much more €8.- will get you at a restaurant in Holland versus Switzerland. I was stuffed!

The campsite is having a disco night, but it's really just kids playing while the parents drink. I feel out of place being here, but the Heineken is good.

Tomorrow's weather forecast looks grim, but the rest of the week should be better.

For kilometers I rode and saw few restaurants and shops; none of which were open. Then I found this place: an Indonesian restaurant, cafe, and bar that also doubles as a shop for curios. This was the last thing I expected to stumble upon out here! Their coffee tastes great.

The weather is much better today, but I'm still fighting a tough headwind.

This cat also jumped up on my shoulders and sat on my handlebar bag.

The campsite last night was interesting, to say the least. The guy running the place was rough looking, very direct, and smoked at least three unfiltered cigarettes in the hour that I knew him.

I asked if he could help me with the laundry machine. He obliged and proceeded to keep a close eye on how I did things. When I tossed my clothes into the drier: "No! Not like that! It's all scrunched up! Place it in the drier gracefully!" He takes this stuff seriously!

After I folded my laundry I saw him standing at his office door wearing -I kid you not- wooden shoes. I know there is some Dutch thing with wooden shoes, but this took me by complete surprise. This was the real deal! I admitted my ignorance and he got out a pair for me to try. It ends up he makes and sells them; not as souvenirs, but to wear! "Walk normally in them!" He didn't seem impressed with how I walked in them, but the shoes were surprisingly comfortable.

He then suggested I check out a nearby field to watch some Dutch sport (or game) that I never heard of. I said I'd look to which he replied, "Open your eyes! It's a special place here!"

On the field were two teams facing each other. One team paddled a ping pong ball sized ball to the opposing team, which they paddled back with a special glove. The ball got paddled back and forth until it was grounded, and that spot got marked. This was repeated and that's all I know. Anybody know what this game is called?

It was a mere 74km today. The headwind was the most I ever experienced and I envied the cyclists passing in the other direction. What a ride they must be having! Lesson learned: Holland is to be crossed from west to east!

The campsite last night was simple and nice. The toilet, shower, and washing facilities where giant plastic units. I can best describe it as a multi-doored deluxe portable toilet. It worked well and didn't smell bad. The owner was kind and made sure I got a spot protected from the wind.

Tonight I'm in a campsite next to a church, and I hope the church bells don't keep me up. The rough looking campsite owner keeps telling me how to do my laundry. :-D

On the Petkum-Ditzum steam ferry. At the ferry terminal was an elderly man snoozing at a picnic table next to the ferry schedule. When I arrived he woke, told me when the next ferry came (40 min), and asked that I sit and wait with him. He then rambled on about places to go, didn't hear a word I said, and insisted (at least 10x) that I get a Youth Hostel card. He was kind and meant well, but I was glad when the ferry finally arrived.

I love riding along canals, and this one is no exception.

Last night I stayed in a cheap hotel near the train station. It was a funny area of town full of gambling shops, businesses with just a desk and chair, and phone services to countries I will likely never visit. The room was mediocre and had a shared toilet and shower, but at least it was big enough to dry out my tent. Breakfast this morning was a delightful surprise.

Made it Wilhelmshaven after a fight with the wind and a few rain showers. There is no camping here so I checked into a cheap hotel.

I'm considering a detour along the Ems-Jade-Radweg, which starts from here and goes directly to Emden. Doing that should get me to Holland by tomorrow night.

I will continue along the North Sea Cycle Route. I don't like goodbyes, but I know Daniela will be with me while I go on and being away lets me look forward to seeing her again.

We had a wonderful visit to Harsefeld. We stayed at the family "Stammhaus" and were well taken care of by our hosts. Thank you again Marga & Erica!

Last night we saw the film "Dorf Punks". It was the story of loosely connected events in the life of a German 80s punk. It wasn't great, but it was entertaining.

I'm still flustered by the arrogance of the ferry boat operator from yesterday. He plainly saw that we were waiting to board and said nothing to us. I call BS: Today was extremely hilly: Going downhill only meant one thing: another big hill was soon to come. We still managed 99km, but will pay for it tomorrow.

We then had the business with the ferry at Risør (see previous post).

Finally, the campsite is infested with tiny flies. We've taken shelter in the tent where we will eat, sleep, and hope for an easier day tomorrow.

On the way to Øysang with our bikes.

  • Friday 26 Jun 2009 18:11

We arrived in Risør and tried to board the Risør-Øysang ferry. The ferry operator just said "no" while a bunch a people started loading sound equipment onto the boat. I figured he simply wanted us to board after everything else was loaded, so we patiently waited. After ~15min of standing there we talked to the operator and learned they were not going to Øysang, and that the next connection was on Monday! Monday!?! I asked about alternatives and he could only suggest going around; an additional 40km.

We visited the tourist office and the person working there was somewhat apologetic about the lousy ferry connection. She also suggested the longer route around and provided maps.

Neither of us wanted to double back, so Daniela took the initiative to ask a local tending to his boat (which we later learned didn't belong to him) if he knew somebody who could take us to Øysang. After conferring with his friend, he offered to take us.

We couldn't have met nicer people. We loaded the bikes onto the front of the boat and were graciously taken to Øysang.

"Every gas station [in Norway] has coffee." This tip was well received as we left Denmark. We're stopped in this little harbour for lunch and coffee. We have wonderful weather but lots of wind.

A challenging and very hot day, but also enjoyable. Cooking lentils for supper.

I'm surprised how similar written Danish & Norwegian is to German. I'm able to understand the gist of many billboards and signs.

Happiness is 71km before lunch. :) We learned something today: Avoid the blue routes on the map. It's up and down hell on loose rock and sand. Perhaps good for mountain biking, but not for touring.

    Did some simple bike maintenance.

Today is a rest day. After 550km we are in Hirsthals where we will catch the ferry to Norway. We had planned to go to Larvik (~160km short of Oslo), but after discussion with other cyclists last night we've decided to go to Kristiansand instead. This will add about a week of riding to get to Oslo, and what we do after that is still open.

We've been lucky with the weather so far. Although chilly and windy at times (the west coast is very popular with kite-surfers), it's all okay as long as it's not raining. The only rain so far has been during the night or early morning before leaving. Let's hope Norway is the same. I heard it can be heaven or hell depending on the weather.

Thank you to everyone who sent me birthday wishes! :)

Last night was terrible. Daniela befriended a cat and let it get cozy in the tent before I kicked it out. It then wouldn't leave us alone. First it clawed at the tent wall to try to get back in and then it kept us up all night with its constant meowing. Needless to say, I was very tired today. Daniela is now to stay away from all animals. ;)

We had a late start and short day. The ride was similar to yesterday but slightly easier due to the calmer winds.

The last 20km was one of the most memorable routes I've ever ridden. The trail was a packed gravel path that wound through and over the rolling hills. Vegetation was mostly grass, shrubs, and small pine trees. It was breathtaking.

We're camped near Hvide Sande and will later visit the western beach. I highly recommend this area if you're ever looking for a place to travel or tour.

Now for a well deserved beer.

Strong winds today. The tailwind from Romo to the mainland got us up to 40km/h with little effort. After that it got much tougher.

This entire area is sparsely populated but ideal for cycling. Denmark caters well to bikers with designated routes that are light or free of auto traffic.

My bike fell over in the train and put a small dent into the crossbar. I'm extremely peeved. Can a dent be taken out of a steel frame?

  • Hallo Chris
